  • Description of direction

    CHARACTERISTIC

    These are natural and technical studies, the program of which covers basic natural disciplines (biology, chemistry, environmental knowledge) and professional knowledge in the field of plant and animal production, economics and organization of farms, markets of agricultural products and the use of computer science in agriculture.
    Students can choose from, among others The following thematic blocks of subjects: animal production, modern plant production and the environment, the circulation of elements in the environment, agribusiness economics, biological progress in agriculture, information systems in agriculture.
    Agriculture graduates have specialist knowledge in the field of agricultural production technology (especially plant production). They are prepared to run a farm independently, as well as to work in agricultural services and advisory. In addition, they gain the ability to use information technology, agricultural production management and control, and knowledge of the use and functioning of agricultural infrastructure.
    Agricultural students receive knowledge about the latest scientific achievements, thanks to which they are perfectly prepared to work in a dynamically developing sector of the economy, which is agriculture and food economy.

Biology

  • Description of direction

    CHARACTERISTIC

    The study program includes general subjects (e.g. physics, mathematics, organic and inorganic chemistry) and specialist subjects (e.g. botany, cytology and animal histology, plant physiology, immunology, introductory biotechnology, human and animal anatomy). What distinguishes the biology course at WULS-SGGW is, above all, the opportunity to acquire specialist knowledge in the field of broadly understood agriculture and food economy. The study program includes m.in. items such as soil science or the basics of plant, animal and forest production. Thanks to exercises and internships held in modern laboratories, students gain the ability to use advanced techniques and research tools. Graduates are prepared to conduct research related to plant or animal breeding, food production and the use of microorganisms in combating pathogens.

    DEVELOPMENT DIRECTIONS
    Depending on the level and form of studies, students can broaden their knowledge of the following topics:

    • experimental biology

    During their studies in the field of Experimental Biology in the field of Biology, students have the opportunity to learn in accordance with their interests by choosing a profile plant biology or animal biology . During their studies, students choose over 30% of subjects, guided by the areas of their own interests. It should be emphasized that the educational modules, apart from lectures, are mostly practical exercises: laboratory or field exercises. Moreover, students are prepared to work with both plant and animal material under the supervision of experienced researchers. The knowledge acquired during studies is systematized at all levels: molecular, cellular, physiological and phylogenetic. Students acquire skills in the use of biological databases, as well as familiarize themselves with elements of biotechnology, including culture techniques in vitro or genetic engineering techniques. During practical classes, students acquire the ability to operate advanced and modern scientific equipment used in commercial / industrial laboratories.

    Graduates of the Experimental Biology specialization have comprehensive and modern knowledge in the field of plant and animal biology . The knowledge gained after completing this specialization allows for independent formulation and solving of research problems, planning experiments, interpretation of research results and their statistical analysis. Graduates are able to competently and visually present the results of their own work and participate in a substantive discussion on any topic in the field of biology.

    Graduates of the Experimental Biology specialty are equipped with universal knowledge and skills, they are flexible and competitive in the demanding labor market . Graduates are prepared to work independently in modern scientific laboratories and in facilities related to plant and animal breeding, nature and environmental protection, as well as in medical and pharmaceutical institutions, or in centers related to the food or cosmetology industry.

    Graduates of the Experimental Biology specialization are perfectly prepared to continue their studies at the third level of education (doctoral studies) organized at the Faculty of Agriculture and Biology, as well as at other universities and research institutes.

Ecological engineering

  • Description of direction

    CHARACTERISTIC

    It is an interdisciplinary field of study that combines elements of natural and technical studies.
    The study program enables students to acquire practical and theoretical knowledge in the field of: biology, agriculture, forestry and environmental protection and shaping.
    Students of this field of study gain specialist knowledge in the field of evaluation of techniques and technologies used in agriculture and forestry. They learn to identify the impact of infrastructure investments
    and industrial environment. They will learn the natural, administrative and legal principles of energy production from renewable and traditional sources.
    Graduates will be prepared to prepare reports and ecological expert opinions in various aspects and at various levels of detail. They will obtain specialist knowledge and skills
    in the field of monitoring environmental management and pro-ecological technologies in shaping the environment. A graduate of ecological engineering will be prepared to assess the effects of ecological disasters caused both by human activity, as well as by natural factors and climate change.

    CURIOSITIES

    Ecological Engineering at SGGW is the only study of this type in Poland. They were opened in the academic year 2012/2013 and are a response to the needs of the modern economy.

    WHAT TO CHOOSE?

    A similar field of study at SGGW is environmental engineering. The main difference is the proportion of science and science in the curriculum. Environmental engineering is a more technical field, and ecological engineering – more natural.

    Characteristics of the direction

    The studies are aimed at educating high-class specialists in the field of organic farming and organic food production. The curriculum is interdisciplinary. Classes will be conducted by academic staff from various departments of the Warsaw University of Life Sciences (Agriculture and Biology, Human Nutrition Sciences and Consumption, Food Sciences, Horticulture, Biotechnology and Landscape Architecture, Animal Sciences, Economic Sciences) and lecturers from other universities, including foreign ones. Innovative activation methods will be used in the education process, aimed at the best preparation of students for professional work. Classes will be conducted in the form of lectures, laboratory exercises and workshops. Graduates will be prepared to work in individual elements of the organic food production chain, processing, trade, control and certification systems as well as in companies related to education, dissemination of knowledge and consulting services in the field of organic farming. The study program was developed in cooperation with representatives of potential employers.

    Study program

    First year: introduction to organic farming, environmental protection, chemistry, basics of botany, agrometeorology, global food production, computer science, foreign language, sustainable food production systems, sustainable rural development, agroecology, soil science, soil and plant microbiology, physiology and ecological animal nutrition, basics plant biochemistry and physiology, study trips to ecological farms, food law or agricultural law, basics of human nutrition.

    Second year: soil cultivation, plant breeding and seed material, organic production control and certification system, plant protection management in organic farming, plant nutrition in the organic system, agricultural technologies for organic farming, food microbiology, organic raw materials, study trips to organic farms, ecological farming grassland, ecological cultivation of field crops, ecological cultivation of vegetables and fruit, weeds and methods of their reduction in ecological farming, scientific research methodology, animal production in organic farming, food safety threats.

    Third year: diploma seminar, mathematical statistics, organization of organic farms or organic food markets and marketing, conversion of farm to organic system, processing of organic plant raw materials, food safety and hygiene, ecological aspects of food and nutrition, processing of organic raw materials of animal origin, international agricultural markets, herbs in organic farming, entrepreneurship in ecological business.

    Career prospects

    First-cycle studies in Organic Agriculture and Food Production at the Warsaw University of Life Sciences provide the opportunity to obtain education in the most desirable specialties, such as organic plant production, food quality and plant protection. In terms of studies, there is also the opportunity to acquire specialist knowledge, teamwork and problem-solving skills.

    Ecological production is developing very dynamically all over the world. It is currently the fastest growing branch of agriculture. Every year, the area of organic farming increases, there are more and more organic food producers, and thus the value of the eco-products market increases.

    Organic production is carried out on all continents, but the largest areas of organic farming are in Oceania, Europe, Latin America and Asia. In Europe, the leaders of organic farming are Spain, Italy and France. The facts proving the dynamic growth suggest that the organic food market is very promising, and education in this direction is a good investment in one’s own future and professional career.

    The development of organic farming is also an important element of the long-term common agricultural policy in the European Union.

    The first-cycle studies in Ecological Agriculture and Food Production are intended for future employees of the organic production chain. Graduates of this course can find work in organic farms, in organic food processing, in trade and in other companies working in the service of organic production.

    Requirements

    The results of the secondary school-leaving examination in biology or chemistry or mathematics and the confirmed knowledge of the English language (language proficiency certificate at the level of min. B2 or the result of the matura exam in English at the advanced level, min. 60%, or a document confirming the completion of a secondary school program conducted entirely in English).

    Duration: 6 semesters;
    Beginning of classes: October 1.

    for foreigners: PLN 4,500.00 per semester
    for Polish citizens – no tuition fees
